LGBTQIA+ Community

The LGBTQ+ community are at a higher risk of being affected by modern slavery and human trafficking than heterosexual individuals.

This is because LGBTQ+ youth face higher rates of discrimination, violence, and economic instability than their non- LGBTQ+ peers.

26% of LGBTQ+ youth are rejected by their families.

This means that LGBTQ+ individuals make up 20% – 40% of homeless youth globally.

After running away or being forced out of their homes, these children commonly fall into the hands of human traffickers who promise to accept them and provide for their basic needs.

They may therefore, enter the street economy, engaging in commercial sex to meet these needs.

Homeless LGBTQ+ youth are 7.4 more times likely to experience sexual violence than heterosexual youth.

Approximately 56% of transgender youth are involved in sex trafficking globally.
